United Way and the AFL-CIO Community Service Program

On August of 1942, an agreement of cooperation was signed by two parties now known as the United Way of America and the AFL-CIO.  This agreement sought cooperation between the employers and the union representatives who both stressed voluntary employee contributions.

Today over 66 years later,  that cooperation still exist.  The basic principle of the AFL-CIO Community Services Program is that the union member is, first and foremost, a citizen who cooperates with other citizens in making the community a good place to live, work, raise children and retire.  Both the AFL-CIO and United Way want a safe and  secure community; both are focusing on helping Children Succeed, increase Financial Stability and help build Strong Families.

For over  40 years Organized Labor and United Way of El Paso County have had a full partnership and united they support programs that will bring people together in "advancing the common good."

Labor Letters of Endorsement Program

Through the Labor Letters of Endorsement Program of the Department of Labor Participation, AFL-CIO President John Sweeney encourages AFL-CIO-affiliated unions, state federations and central labor councils to send letters endorsing United Way campaign giving to their membership.   At a local level this encouragement is enhanced by having  local union members and our Central Labor Union President take part during work place campaigns to endorse United Way giving.  "Giving to your local United Way is doing what union members do best, it is simply the passing of the hat, to help support our community and united we can make a difference" a statement often used by  David Aranda, El Paso Central Labor Union President and a member of the United Way Board.
