Strong Families


All families and communities deal with problems from time to time; the need may be for emergency housing, health care or family support and education services, El Pasoans can count on United Way agencies for help.  The statistics below demonstrate some of the needs that face our families.

 

According to the Paso Del Norte Health Foundation 2005 report (based on a telephone survey) 40% of El Paso County adults lack health insurance compared to 14.5% nationally, and 24% of adult's rate their health as fair or poor compared to 15% nationally.

An estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year.

In 2005, El Paso County had 6,865 reported cases of child abuse and neglect and 1,468 were confirmed. 

The Homeless Coalition in El Paso estimates that 872 adults and 316 children are homeless on any given day.

United Way addresses pressing family issues facing our community.  United Way works to ensure everyone has access to affordable and quality care so they can lead safe, healthy, and rewarding lives. United Way supports local health and human service programs as well as partners with local advocates, faith leaders, healthcare professionals, the business community, and policy makers to create sustainable answers to these pressing issues.

FACT: If youth maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid risky behaviors, by 2018 the number of healthy adults in our country could increase by 1.9 million.

Our goals are to:

 

 

Increase access to mental health and substance abuse services for adults.

Meet basic needs of individuals, families, seniors, and children experiencing hunger,

homelessness, emergency financial challenges, and/or disasters.

 

Reduce domestic violence including child abuse and neglect.

 

Increase the number of healthy adults.

 

Encourage cooperation between the military and the community to ensure

support for all military connected families.
