El Paso, TX (Fri., Sept. 8, 2017) – AmeriCorps of all branches of service across El Paso will participate in a beautification project of McKelligon Canyon during what is known as National Day of Service and Remembrance Day.
The tradition that began in 2002 was first established to inspire and engage charitable service on 9/11 as an annual and forward-looking tribute to the 9/11 victims, survivors and those who rose up in service in response to the attacks.
Participants include five United Way AmeriCorps VISTAs as well as 19 parent educators from our AmeriCorps Parents as Teachers program in addition to other service members across El Paso. VISTAs strengthen organizations that alleviate poverty through volunteering and the mobilization of resources all while building capacity and their respective organizations. United Way’s parent educators deliver the home visitation program that teaches parents about child development to ensure they nurture and prepare their children for school.
Service members will spend a full day of picking up litter throughout the park to restore its wild beauty for our community to enjoy.
