The National Association of Letter Carrierswill conduct the largest annual one day food drive, Stamp Out Hunger, to be held on Saturday, May 12th, 2012. Our letter carriers will not only be delivering our mail but will also be collecting non-perishable food items. The collected food will be then delivered to the West Texas Food Bank/El Pasoans Fighting Hunger.
Now in its 20th year, the annual food drive has grown from a regional to a national effort that provides assistance to the millions of Americans struggling to put food on the table. Last year in El Paso, the food drive collected over 98 tons of food. This year, the goal is to reach over 100 tons!
Statistics indicate that sixteen percent of all Americans are at risk of hunger, including 1 in 5 children under the age of 18 and 4 million seniors who must choose whether to pay a utility bill or buy food. The need continues to grow as 49 million live in households that experience hunger or the risk of hunger in our country.
It's easy to help:
-
Collect and bag non-perishable food items.
-
Place by mailbox for letter carrier to deliver to a local food bank or pantry.
Note: If you have a neighborhood mail box, postal customers are being encouraged to take their donations to their local post office. Glass containers or out dated food products should not be included.
