UWEPC helps individuals and families in El Paso with household incomes of $66,000 or less to save money and hassle by filing their tax returns through MyFreeTaxes.com or at a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site.
The online tool allows taxpayers to self-file for free using a simple step-by-step process that includes free telephone, email and online chat support from IRS-certified specialists. The availability of the free online tax preparation services will coincide with the IRS tax season start. MyFreeTaxes.com can be used from anywhere on any secure desktop or mobile device.
MyFreeTaxes also provides qualifying filers access to tax coaches for in-person, self-preparation assistance. Among those who will provide support are high school students who receive accreditation to become volunteer income tax assisters at the sites.
VITA is a free face-to-face tax preparation program for qualified families with an annual household income up to $54,000. VITA is available to the community through the Coalition for Family Economic Progress (CFEP), an alliance of more than 21 private public and nonprofit organizations, including United Way, dedicated to economic empowerment.
VITA offers IRS-certified volunteers who will prepare basic returns for familes and individuals who live in El Paso County and our surrounding communities. The program helps thousands of area families by offering free tax-related assistance such as:
- Electronic tax prep
- Assistance with Individual Tax Identification Number
- Referrals to the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic
- Workshops on tax rights and obligations
