El Paso, TX (Feb. 4, 2017) The United Way of El Paso County (UWEPC) has once again partnered with Canutillo Indpenednent School District (CISD) to offer families a method to file their taxes for free during the 2017 tax season.
Families and individuals with a household income of $62,000 or less are welcomed to attend one of seven Tax Saturdays offered at Canutillo High School Library. There, people can access computers to use the online self-preparation tool MyFreeTaxes.com. Those needing more assistance can find help through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program who will have IRS-certified volunteers onsite to prepare basic returns for families or individuals with an annual household income of $54,00 or less.
On average, American tax filers can save $200 in tax preparation by using MyFreeTaxes.com, the first free national, online tax filing platform. The online tool allows taxpayers to self-file for free using a simple step-by-step process that includes free telephone, email and online chat support from IRS-certified specialists. The availability of the free online tax preparation services will coincide with the IRS tax season start.
Offering free English and Spanish tax support, MyFreeTaxes also provides qualifying filers access to tax coaches for in-person, self-preparation assistance. Among those who will provide support are 12 high school students who received accreditation to become volunteer income tax assisters at the site. Other community volunteers, who received accreditation, have joined in effort to help local families save money. Currently, Canutillo High School (6675 S. Desert Blvd.) is a confirmed MyFreeTaxes/VITA site that will host assisters February 4, 11, 25; March 4 and 25; and April 1 and 8 at 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
