United Way of El Paso County receives $5 million-gift from MacKenzie Scott

Largest single donation in organization history

Statement from Deborah Zuloaga, President & CEO, United Way of El Paso County:

“Our United Way of El Paso County is honored and sincerely humbled to be among a select group of organizations in our region to receive a more than generous donation from respected and influential philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.

To have earned the trust of such a kind-hearted individual whose philanthropic goals align with ours including in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion, economic justice, public health, and education, gives our team further inspiration to transform lives. Our mission has always been to ensure El Paso’s children and families are happy, healthy and strong and this gift significantly increases our potential to do just that.

As good stewards of this $5 million-gift, it will be our priority to work collaboratively with corporate partners, our board of directors, community volunteers and the next generation of philanthropists, who are part of our young professional donor networks, to develop and implement a plan to address our community’s needs and make the most of these dollars. This is not only a direct gift to our United Way but an investment in our community and its residents.”

Press Release

(El Paso, TX) December 15, 2020 -- United Way of El Paso County today announced MacKenzie Scott, author and philanthropist, has donated $5 million to support community-based work in education, health, basic needs and financial stability. Scott announced the gift and recipients today in a Medium blog post.

“Our United Way of El Paso County is honored and sincerely humbled to be among a select group of organizations in our region to receive a more than generous donation from respected and influential philanthropist MacKenzie Scott,” said Deborah A. Zuloaga CEO of United Way of El Paso County. “To have earned the trust of such a kind-hearted individual whose philanthropic goals align with ours including in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion, economic justice, public health, and education, gives our team further inspiration to transform lives. Our mission has always been to ensure El Paso’s children and families are happy, healthy and strong and this gift significantly increases our potential to do just that.

Scott’s donation comes at a critical time as the response to the unrelenting demands for services due to the social and economic upheaval of the past year; the ongoing health crisis from the pandemic; and the uncertainty surrounding additional federal aid to help those in crisis continue. United Way of El Paso County has been on-the-ground providing services for those facing hardship, particularly in the wake of the pandemic.

For United Way of El Paso County, the important step of deciding how to make use of dollars will be a collaborative process with corporate partners, our board of directors, community volunteers and the next generation of philanthropists, who are part of our young professional donor networks. Together, a plan will be developed and implemented to address the community’s needs and make the most of this donation.

“This is a testament to the strength of the United Way network across the U.S.” said United Way U.S. President, Suzanne McCormick.  “Even before COVID-19, United Way has been a leader in American communities, tackling the toughest problems. This investment will help United Way continue its impactful work through COVID and beyond – especially in creating equitable access for all.”
