Before partnering with United Way of El Paso County, WE HIKE had a strong foundation in outdoor safety, education, and wellness, but no structured youth programming to connect young people in the community with those experiences.

The organization had the passion and expertise but lacked the guidelines, partnerships, and resources needed to effectively reach and serve youth across the El Paso region.

That began to change when WE HIKE connected with the BOOST Network, a United Way of El Paso County initiative that strengthens out-of-school-time programming and youth-serving organizations through collaboration, training, and shared best practices.

Through the BOOST Network, WE HIKE gained access to resources such as professional development, programming frameworks, and relationships with organizations already serving youth across the Paso del Norte region. That support helped transform their vision into action, allowing them to launch youth-focused programming and expand their reach in the community.

One small moment showed just how impactful this partnership could be. When WE HIKE needed materials translated into bilingual formats to better serve local families, Ana Ramirez, Healthy Kids Marketing Coordinator at United Way of El Paso County, stepped in to help.

This simple, but meaningful, act showed the organization they weren’t working alone. They had a partner invested in their success and growth.

Soon after, the impact became even more visible. Through BOOST Network partnerships and participation in the annual Lights On Afterschool event, WE HIKE brought more than 25 young people to the NMSU vs. UTEP football game this past fall.

For Lisa Enriquez, President and Founder of WE HIKE, the moment was enlightening.

Seeing young people arrive together, proudly wearing their Lights On Afterschool shirts, confirmed that the organization was finally connecting with youth and the community in a meaningful way.

In that moment, Lisa realized the partnership with United Way of El Paso County and the BOOST Network had not only opened doors but helped pave the path forward, walking alongside the organization as it grew.

Today, WE HIKE is continuing to serve underserved areas where access to outdoor experiences have been limited. The organization is helping young people build confidence, develop new skills, and experience the benefits of outdoor wellness, all while laying the foundation for even greater community impact ahead.

Lisa also offers advice to other local nonprofits looking to grow their impact:

“If you have an idea, go for it. Connect, network, join in, and be willing to learn along the way. Too many people wait until they feel ‘ready.’ But the truth is, the magic happens when you show up, stay open, and take that first vulnerable step. Don’t wait. Dive in. You might uncover something bigger than you ever expected.”

Through programs like the BOOST Network, United Way of El Paso County helps local nonprofits expand their impact and reach the families who need it most.

When local organizations grow, opportunities for our youth grow with them.
